Skyler! I love this! We could discuss nuances until the cows come home. Cause I know every family, every individual, is going to navigate this somewhat differently. I know some parents have excellent relationships with their children and same-sex partners, and I also know that doesn’t automatically mean approval of every aspect.
But I was recently with a gathering of church members of many ages. A couple parents mentioned some children who had strayed for the moment. I realized that a part of me had been conditioned to call them out (even if just in my mind) for being “judgmental” or tell them to get beyond these feelings and “arrive” at the principle that God is mindful of them. While we know that God sees the bigger picture, I feel like parents need their own support and their own space to feel all that there is to feel. To me THAT is where love for their child can come in and be expressed. Not through putting on a face and pretending everything is ok because of pressure from the queer mob.
Couldn't agree more! It's a delicate dynamic, and there will be different nuances in every situation. I think parents should feel empowered to point their child toward Christ, ignoring the extreme advocacy on one side and the fostering of shame on the other. Thanks for reading/watching:)
